  • Bauhaus
    December 04, 2007, 1:55 PM ET
    Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. Billboard
The good news for Bauhaus fans: the group is eyeing a March 4 release for "Going Away White," its first studio album since 1983. The bad news: there will be no further activity from the legendary goth band, who reunited in 2005 for the Coachella festival and later toured the world.

"We were getting along really well, but there was an incident that occurred," drummer Kevin Haskins tells Billboard.com, declining to elaborate further. "Some of us just felt that we didn't want to carry on as a working unit."

As such, "Going Away White," which the band is releasing digitally via iTunes and on CD via its own Bauhaus Music imprint through Redeye Distribution, will close the book on Bauhaus. Haskins, guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J and vocalist Peter Murphy recorded the album last year after entering the studio "with nothing prepared," according to Haskins.

"I was concerned because history most of the time has proved that when groups reform and record, it doesn't work out," he says. "We all decided, let's just give it a go and see if it's working.

What emerged were songs Haskins says stay true to the original Bauhaus spirit, including "Adrenaline" and "Endless Summer of the Damned," which were performed during a summer 2006 tour with Nine Inch Nails.

"Now, there's a little bit of an empty feeling because we can't tour with it," Haskins admits. "All the same, it's something we're very proud of, and we feel a lot of people will be interested to hear it."

    Love And Rockets
    Special Swing Edition
Released in USA / Canada only

Love And Rockets' eponymous fourth album is the latest to get the remastering treatment - as usual from the original studio tapes for improved sound quality and including an expanded booklet. As well as adding four bonus tracks to the original album this edition includes a bonus CD of the legendary Swing session and a bonus radio interview with additional live versions.

The original album was the bands biggest seller and includes the USA top ten hit, So Alive.

To explain the Swing story here's an extract from Apollux, the official L & R fanzine, written by Andy Brooksbank.

Every serious fan of Love and Rockets will no doubt be familiar with at least the legend that is The Swing E.P. A series of songs recorded at the Love and Rockets sessions and set for release in 1989. Here's a sample of what was said about these recordings back then....

Daniel Ash, speaking to Village Voice ..." we've gone right back to very simple rock and roll, almost similar to the way The Cramps were really, that sort of simplicity " "This is hopefully going to be a real difference, a real change again. I don't know if you know of a song called Lazy (see: Earth-Sun-Moon), well its sort of in that area where its a lot lighter, a lot more fun. Not so much soul searching which can be a little bit too heavy and over-complicated and I just thought, you know, time to do something completely new again, which is what happened with us anyway for the past two or three years. It isn't obscure or anything, I mean they're very immediate tracks. That's the whole idea. I mean listening to early Elvis Presley and things like that inspired it ? that type of feel"

Daniel Ash to Rolling Stone September 1989...."It's The Andrew Sisters meets Captain Beefheart"

David J to Musician October 1989..."Quite an odd bunch of little songs, they're quite jocular in a black sort of way, we're not sure what came over us..."

David J to Apollox December 1996..."We didn't release it because we had too many tracks for the Love and Rockets album although we did toy with the idea of making it a double but scotched this as the Swing tracks were so, well odd!
We decided that we would put them out as a separate e.p. when the time was right and basically that time has not come to pass yet, either because of logistics or musical climate...one day"
